Concept

This is a new museum, named it Prospective Museum, questioning the fundamental meaning of museums.
Visitors will be exposed to creative contemporary arts and have direct experience of the current art scenes and movements in Japan.
We designated artists who will exhibit their new works every year for a period of 10 years.
They are internationally known artists in Japan who are on the cutting edge of the contemporary arts.
Visitors will be exposed to strong energy from artists through running into the current art themes in Japan.

Background

The background of S-HOUSE Museum is based on the idea of Mr. Shuzo TAKIGUCHI(1903-1979). He was an art critic who advocated for contemporary art as a means to enrich people’s lives. During the chaotic period after the war, he supported a number of artists based on liberal ideas that are free from any preexisting concepts. As a result, the artists supported by Mr. TAKIGUCHI were in the forefront of the avant-garde movements in Japan. As an example of his influence, a concept of the S-House museum-embodying contemporary art is originally from an idea of Mr. Arata ISOZAKI, with whom I worked closely to open the Nagi Museum Of Contemporary Art. Nagi MOCA is thus the “third generation” museum that exhibits site-specific arts in the tradition of Mr. TAKIGUCHI. S-House Museum is a prospective museum which takes over the third generation museum. Hope you enjoy the cutting edge of Japanese contemporary art. (Kaoru HANAFUSA)

Building

The original building of the museum was built in 1997; the wooden structure was designed by SANAA (Kazuyo SEJIMA + Ryue NISHIZAWA). In order to remodel the building and establish S-HOUSE Museum, Takashi SUO has collaborated with artists to create optimal space.

コンセプト（基本理念）

この美術館は、前方視的ミュージアム（Prospective Museum）と名づけた、新たな美術館のあり方を提案する実験的なものです。
変化する芸術家の創作活動を通して”同時代を生き生きと体感できる美術館”を目指します。
展示する作家を固定し、10年計画で作家ごとに毎年新作を加えて展示し続けます。
我が国で今後の活躍が期待され、世界各地で活発な活動を続けている現代芸術の俊英たちの作品を展示します。
我が国の誇る最先端の現代美術に直接触れていただきたいとの思いから選考しました。

背景

ミュージアム設立の背景には瀧口修造の影響があります。瀧口は”同時代の芸術こそ人々の心を豊かにする”と信じた評論家でした。第二次世界大戦後の日本の混乱期に自由な精神に基づいて一ファンとしての立場から芸術家たちを支援しつづけました。その結果、関わった芸術家の多くが各分野の先頭に立ち日本文化を牽引しました。私が最初に瀧口の思想を反映した美術館を提案し、作家を選定して開館に至ったのは奈義町現代美術館（Nagi MOCA）でした。ここでは磯崎新が世界初のサイトスペシフィックな展示方法を提案し第三世代美術館と名づけました。S-HOUSEミュージアムは瀧口の思想を受け継ぎながら、形式は第三世代美術館に続く新たな美術館のあり方である“前方視的ミュージアム”を提案し、内容としては現代日本の芸術の最先端を体験できる美術館でありたいとの願いから生まれました。（花房香）
